The area of statutory is one of the growing concepts. The changing legislative environment has leaded an increasing burden for the employers and their advisers. It is necessary to keep in mind the changes, their implication and their application of new rules. The statutory payments are of 2 types:
When employee is sick
When employee becoming a parent
Statutory Sick Pay (SSP)
When employee is sick Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) is paid to employees who are unable to work due to illness. SSP is paid at the same time and in the same way as you would pay wages for the same period. An employer is responsible for paying SSP to employees who meet certain qualifying conditions.

The earnings threshold for these payments is £90 per week in 2008-09. It is not payable for the first 3 qualifying days of the illness, but it is payable thereafter up to 28 weeks. After that an employee will have to claim under state sickness benefit. Statutory sick pay will be paid by the employer and reclaimed from the state.
 
Statutory Maternity Payment
When employee becoming a parent
Statutory Maternity Payment (SMP) is paid to female employees who are about to have a baby. It is paid to women who have been in the same employment throughout their pregnancy and it is essential where the employee fulfils certain requirements.

SMP is a weekly payment made by the employer who can claim it back and can recover money in advance of making SMP payments. SMP can be paid for up to 39 weeks. The first 6 weeks are paid at 90% of the woman’s average weekly earnings with no upper limit. The remaining 33 weeks are paid at the standard rate or 90% of the woman’s average weekly earnings if this calculation results in a lower amount.
 
Statutory Paternity Payment

Statutory Paternity Payment (SPP) is paid to partners who take care for the baby or support the mother in the first few weeks after the birth. It is available to: A biological father. A partner/husband or civil partner who is not the baby’s biological father. A mother’s female partner in a same sex couple.

Statutory Adoption Payment
An employee may be entitled to Statutory Adoption Pay (SAP) if they adopt a child. Normal earning will help an employee to take care about there child which is placed with them. To pay SAP depend on how long you worked for an employer and how much you earn during the year.
